How to learn the flags of Africa

AM Ismail - AtlasGenie Team · Published

With 54 countries, Africa is the biggest challenge in any flag quiz. Many flags share the same few colours, so learning them one by one is slow. It's much faster to learn them in families.

Family 1: the pan-African colours

Red, yellow and green come from the flag of Ethiopia, which kept its independence through the colonial era apart from a brief Italian occupation. When Ghana became independent in 1957, it used these colours with a black star, and many countries followed.

  • Ethiopia: green, yellow and red stripes with a blue disc and star.
  • Ghana: red, gold and green stripes with a black star.
  • Guinea, Mali and Senegal: vertical tricolours. Guinea is red, yellow, green; Mali is green, yellow, red; Senegal is Mali's flag with a green star.
  • Cameroon: green, red, yellow with a yellow star on the red band.

Family 2: the Pan-Arab colours

In North Africa, several flags use red, white, black and green, the colours of the Arab Revolt.

  • Egypt: red, white and black stripes with a golden eagle.
  • Sudan: red, white and black with a green triangle.
  • Libya: red, black and green with a white crescent and star.

Family 3: flags with a memorable emblem

These are the easiest to learn, because each has one striking symbol:

  • Kenya: a Maasai shield and two crossed spears.
  • Eswatini: a shield and spears on a blue, yellow and red flag.
  • Mozambique: a book, a hoe and a rifle.
  • Uganda: a grey crowned crane in a white circle.
  • Zimbabwe: the soapstone Zimbabwe Bird.
  • Angola: a half cog wheel and a machete with a star.

Family 4: the one-of-a-kind designs

South Africa's six-colour Y-shape and the Seychelles' fan of rays don't look like anything else, so they're quick wins.

Then tackle the look-alikes

Once the families are clear, focus on the pairs that still trip you up: Mali and Guinea (reversed), Senegal and Mali (the star), Niger and India's flag outside Africa, and Côte d'Ivoire and Ireland (reversed). Each country page shows its look-alikes side by side.

A practice plan

Play the Flags quiz with the region set to Africa on Explorer until you score a silver medal, then switch to Expert, where the wrong answers are look-alikes. Ten minutes a day for a week is enough to learn most of the continent.
