About the flag
South Africa's flag has a horizontal Y-shape in green, edged in white and gold, with a black triangle at the flagpole, a red band on top and a blue band below. It was designed by Frederick Brownell and first flown in 1994, the year of the first democratic elections. The Y-shape is often read as different groups coming together and moving forward as one.
