About AtlasGenie
AtlasGenie is a fast, calm geography quiz in your browser. Explore flags, capitals, official languages and country shapes, try a mixed quiz, or place a pin on the globe in Pin Drop. Games have 10 rounds, with a fact card after each answer so you can learn as you play.
How questions are built
Each multiple-choice question has exactly one right answer. Checks reject an ambiguous question and draw another before it is shown. A subject country never repeats within the same game.
Explorer chooses random wrong options from your selected region. Expert prioritises flag look-alikes, similar names, trap cities and neighbours, depending on the mode. Country shapes use simplified outlines, and official-language questions are checked so overlapping languages do not create a second right option. Pin Drop asks you to locate a capital or country rather than choose an option.
Country data and flags
Country names, codes, capitals, official languages, regions and borders come from world-countries, licensed under the Open Database Licence 1.0. AtlasGenie adapts that data for quiz questions and maintains curated corrections.
Flag images come from svg-country-flags, whose flag artwork is published in the public domain. Local corrections take priority over package images. National symbols may be subject to separate rules about their use in particular countries. SVG preparation uses SVGO, under the MIT licence.
Country outlines and the world map
Country outlines, capital coordinates and the Pin Drop world map use Natural Earth, whose data is public domain. Outlines are packaged through world-atlas, under the ISC licence.
Country outlines are simplified for a quiz and are not to scale. They follow Natural Earth, adjusted to internationally recognised borders where those differ from the situation on the ground. Showing an outline is not a position on any territorial dispute.
Pin Drop imagery and software
The interactive Pin Drop map uses MapLibre GL JS, licensed under BSD-3-Clause.
Satellite imagery is NASA Blue Marble, provided as NASA open data under NASA’s imagery-use guidance. The tiles are packaged by FreeTiler, under the MIT licence, and served with AtlasGenie rather than fetched from a third-party map service during play.
