About the flag

Romania's flag is a vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red. The colours were used together during the revolution of 1848 and, as vertical bands, from 1867. Under communist rule a state emblem sat in the centre; during the revolution of December 1989 protesters cut it out, and the plain tricolour has been the flag ever since.

The flag's proportions are 2:3, with three equal bands. It has no emblem, which is why it is so easy to mix up with its look-alikes.

Often confused with

Romania
Andorra

Andorra's middle band is wider and carries a coat of arms. Romania's three bands are equal and plain.

Romania
Moldova

Moldova uses similar colours but has an eagle holding a shield in the yellow band, and its flag is longer (1:2).

Romania
Chad

The bands and their order are the same. Romania's blue is a brighter cobalt; Chad's is a darker, inky indigo.
