About the flag

Germany's flag is three horizontal stripes of black, red and gold. The colours go back to the uniforms of volunteers who fought against Napoleon and to the democratic movement of 1848. They were adopted by the Weimar Republic and again by West Germany in 1949, and became the flag of reunified Germany in 1990.

Often confused with

Belgium

Belgium uses the same three colours as vertical bands, with yellow in the middle. Horizontal stripes with red in the middle mean Germany.
