About the flag

Belgium's flag is three vertical bands of black, yellow and red, with black at the flagpole. The colours come from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant, a black and gold lion on a red background, and the flag dates from Belgium's independence in 1830 and 1831. Its official shape is unusually close to square, at 13:15, although longer versions are common.

Often confused with

Germany

Germany uses the same three colours as horizontal stripes, with red in the middle. Vertical bands with yellow in the middle mean Belgium.
