About the flag

Spain's flag has three horizontal stripes of red, yellow and red, with the yellow stripe twice as tall as each red one, and the national coat of arms towards the flagpole. The colours date from 1785, when King Charles III chose a flag that would stand out at sea. The coat of arms includes the Pillars of Hercules with the motto "Plus Ultra", further beyond, and the current version was adopted in 1981.
