About the flag
Portugal's flag is divided vertically into green at the flagpole and red, with the national coat of arms on the border between them. The coat of arms sits on an armillary sphere, a navigation instrument that recalls Portugal's age of exploration. Green is usually read as hope and red as the blood of those who died for the nation. It was adopted in 1911, after the monarchy ended.
