About the flag
Colombia's flag has three horizontal stripes: yellow on top, taking up half the flag, then blue and red. It comes from the flag of Gran Colombia, designed by the independence leader Francisco de Miranda, which Colombia shared with Ecuador and Venezuela. Yellow is often explained as the country's wealth, blue as the two oceans on its coasts, and red as the blood of those who fought for independence.
Often confused with
Ecuador's flag has the same stripes but carries a coat of arms with a condor in the centre.
Venezuela's three stripes are equal in height, and an arc of eight white stars sits in the blue stripe.
