About the flag
Nicaragua's flag has three horizontal stripes of blue, white and blue, with the coat of arms in the centre. The coat of arms is a triangle showing five volcanoes between two seas, a red Phrygian cap of liberty and a rainbow, inside a circle of gold lettering reading "República de Nicaragua, América Central". The rainbow makes it one of very few national flags that include purple.
Often confused with
Honduras has five blue stars in the centre instead of a coat of arms.
El Salvador's coat of arms is framed by flags and a green laurel wreath, not a ring of lettering.
