About the flag
El Salvador's flag has three horizontal stripes of blue, white and blue, with the national coat of arms in the centre. The arms show a triangle with five volcanoes rising from the sea, framed by flags and a green laurel wreath, with the motto "Dios, Unión, Libertad". The blue and white come from the Federal Republic of Central America, which also gave its colours to Honduras and Nicaragua.
Often confused with
Honduras has five blue stars in the centre instead of a coat of arms.
Nicaragua's triangle sits inside a circle of gold lettering, with no laurel wreath around it.
