About the flag

Nepal has the only national flag that is not a rectangle or a square. It is made of two stacked pennants in crimson red with a blue border. The upper pennant holds a white crescent moon and the lower one a white sun. The current form, with exact construction rules written into the constitution, was adopted on 16 December 1962.

The two pennants are often linked to the Himalayas and to the two branches of a former ruling dynasty. The moon and sun are said to express the hope that the nation will last as long as they do. Crimson is the colour of the rhododendron, Nepal's national flower.
