Geography quiz

Flags, capitals, languages and country shapes, shuffled into 10 rounds of 15 seconds.

Region
Difficulty
  • Which country does this flag belong to?
  • What's the capital of Peru?

Our geography quiz mixes every kind of question into one game: flags, capital cities, official languages and country shapes. Each of the 10 timed rounds brings something different, so it is the best all-round test of your world geography. Choose World or a single region, then play Explorer to learn or Expert for look-alikes, trap cities and neighbours. A fact card follows each answer with the country's flag, outline, capital and languages. Your best scores are saved for every region and difficulty, and the whole quiz is free to play.

The geography quiz mixes all four AtlasGenie modes into one game of 10 rounds. Every game has at least two questions from each mode: flags, capitals, official languages and country shapes. The last two rounds go to whichever modes the shuffle picks. Each mode asks in both directions, so you might name the country from its flag in one round and find the flag of a named country in the next.

No country appears twice in one game, and you'll never get the same kind of question more than twice in a row. That makes it the best test of all-round knowledge, and the best way to find out which mode you should practise next.

Each question has a 15-second timer, which starts only once the question and its pictures are fully on screen. Answer with a tap, a click or the keys 1 to 4. After every answer a fact card shows the country's flag, outline, capital, official languages and region. The clock stays stopped while you read, and you press Next when you're ready.

A right answer earns 500 points, plus a speed bonus of up to 500 more. Answer within one second for the full bonus; it then falls steadily and reaches zero at 15 seconds. A wrong answer, or running out of time, scores nothing. Ten rounds make a perfect game of 10,000.

Your answer streak counts right answers in a row and resets on a miss. Your best score for each region and difficulty is kept in this browser, so you can come back and try to beat it.

On Explorer, the wrong answers are random choices from your region. It's a relaxed way to see a bit of everything.

On Expert, every mode uses its own traps. Flags bring look-alikes such as Chad and Romania. Capitals bring famous cities that aren't capitals, such as Sydney for Australia or Istanbul for Türkiye. Languages bring the languages of neighbouring countries. Shapes bring neighbours and countries with similar outlines. Because the modes switch every round, you can't settle into one way of thinking, which is what makes Mixed on Expert the hardest game on the site.

Use the fact cards. Each one connects a flag, an outline, a capital and a set of languages to the same country, and those links are exactly what later rounds test. If you keep missing one mode, play its own quiz on Explorer for a few games, then come back.

Pick one region at a time to build depth before you play World. Read the whole question before answering, because the direction changes: "Which country has this flag?" and "Which of these is the flag of…?" need different kinds of looking. Speed matters, but a right answer at ten seconds still beats a wrong one at two. Finally, keep an eye on your streak: a calm run of right answers is worth more than a few lucky fast ones.
