About the flag

Cuba's flag has five horizontal stripes, three blue and two white, with a red triangle at the flagpole holding a white five-pointed star known as La Estrella Solitaria, the lone star. It was designed in 1849 by independence campaigners and became the national flag when Cuba gained independence in 1902. The three blue stripes are often said to stand for the island's three historical regions.

Often confused with

Cuba
Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico's flag swaps the colours: red and white stripes with a blue triangle. Blue stripes and a red triangle mean Cuba.
